It’s the first new hospital in Ontario in over 30 years.
With COVID-19 cases inundating Ontario’s hospitals, the province’s healthcare system is currently ‘on the brink of collapse’ and additional capacity in hospitals is desperately needed, according to provincial health officials. Therefore, it comes as great news that Ontario will soon be opening its first newly built hospital in more than three decades.
Premier Doug Ford has announced that Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will open on February 7, 2021 in Vaughan, Ontario. To start its operations, the new facility will be dedicated to COVID-19 patients to help alleviate the overcrowding of Greater Toronto Area hospitals due to the pandemic.
This latest addition to Ontario’s healthcare system will add 35 new critical care beds and 150 general medical beds to the province’s current bed capacity. The new hospital is intended to provide care and services to patients from across the western York Region as originally planned once COVID-19 capacity pressures have stabilized.
The provincial government has indicated they plan to continue investing in building new hospitals in Ontario, with $18 billion expected to be spent over the next 10 years.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first newly built hospital in Ontario in 30+ years. This incredible, state of the art facility will add needed capacity to our health care system.
