After a sweltering hot and sunny start to the week, Toronto is in for some serious weather whiplash as the remnants from Hurricane Beryl move across the region this week.
Yet another weather warning has been issued by Environment Canada for Toronto this week, but this time instead of a heat warning, it’s for rainfall, with the city expected to be hit with “torrential downpours” on Wednesday of up to 20-40 millimetres per hour.
Hurricane Beryl has so far wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and southern United States, leaving over 2 million people without power after reaching land near Houston. At least 8 people have tragically lost their lives so far, as Beryl continues to move northeast.
While it has since weakened to a tropical cyclone, its effects are still severe within its path and potentially life-threatening.
For Ontario, regions extending from Windsor to east of the Quebec border and cottage country are expected to experience heavy rainfall starting overnight Tuesday or Wednesday morning.
Some areas of Ontario could receive over 60 millimetres of rain, with threats of flooding.
“By the time Thursday is done the whole system and the cloud goes with it, setting up a really nice weekend. The challenge will just be dealing with it, mostly tomorrow morning,” meteorologist Bill Coulter states.
If you have to go out, give yourself plenty of extra time and avoid any shorelines, rivers and streams, as they should be considered dangerous.
Stay safe and dry, Toronto!
