Sandy beaches and palm trees might not be what comes to mind when you think of Ontario, but one beach is bringing the tropical vibes all summer long.
Perched on the shores of Lake Erie in Norfolk County, you’ll feel like you’ve teleported down south when you discover Port Dover beach.
With golden sand, warm, shallow water, and real palm trees, this charming beach town makes for the perfect getaway this season.
Port Dover is just under a two hour drive from Toronto, and boasts a relaxed, resort town feel. Known for its great fishing and boating community, the small town is also the home base for the famous Friday the 13th motorcycle rally, which began in the 1980s.
Downtown, you’ll find quaint shops and boutiques to browse, along with cafes and restaurants for when you get hungry. There are also beautiful green spaces in town, a historic pier and lighthouse, and of course, the beach.
Port Dover beach is a great place to sunbathe and cool off with a dip in the water, lined with beach bars and local restaurants.
The owners of one of those restaurant, The Beach House, plants the beach’s iconic row of real palm trees along the waterfront each summer, which has gone on for the past decade or so.
Imported straight from Florida, the trees surprisingly thrive throughout the season, before being transported to a green house in the fall. You’ll be able to see the famous palms typically from May through October.
Port Dover beach is open daily from dawn through dusk, and there is no lifeguard on duty, so you’ll have to swim at your own risk.
Once the sun starts to set, head to one of the waterfront restaurants and grab a bite or cocktail and enjoy the sunset under the palms!
