On the surface, the pulsating beats of hip-hop and the soaring melodies of classical music seem worlds apart. But, they share a deeper connection than you might first think. Toronto’s genre-bending string collective, Strings from Paris, will challenge this preconceived notion in a one-of-a-kind concert at Evergreen Brickworks.
“Many people see classical and hip-hop as almost opposites,” said Aaron Paris, Toronto producer and founder of Strings from Paris. “That’s why I think exploring classical through modern genres like hip-hop or R&B that seem very culturally different and getting people to see the beauty and commonalities in both, is beneficial to the classical world but also music and culture as a whole.”
Strings from Paris owes its unique sound to Paris’ visionary talent. As the mastermind and arranger, he brought together skilled string musicians to seamlessly blend their talents and create a harmonious and captivating musical experience.
Blurring the lines between genres
But this concert isn’t just about blending genres; it’s about blurring the lines and fostering a deeper appreciation for music as a whole.
“That’s why in the set you’ll hear classical pieces from composers such as Schoenberg and Ravel, blended seamlessly with modern artists such as Frank Ocean and Aaliyah,” explained Aaron Paris. “You’ll also see us incorporating modern techniques such as sample triggers and guitar pedals. Hopefully, we can provide a different insight into classical music as well as modern genres, to create a better understanding between these worlds.”
This could explain how they have taken social media by storm with their unique reimaginings of hip-hop and R&B classics through the lens of classical music.
Their upcoming show on July 20, “R&B, Hip Hop, and Classical,“ promises just that. You’ll hear a brand new setlist featuring an innovative hip-hop mashup (think Dr. Dre, The Notorious B.I.G., Lil Wayne, and A Tribe Called Quest) alongside unexpected classical gems. These include Carter Pann’s “Love Letters,” and Debussy’s “La fille aux cheveux de lin,” with more surprises in store.
Reimagining the classics for a new generation
Toronto, a vibrant tapestry of cultures, serves as the perfect backdrop for Strings from Paris’ mission. Just as hip-hop samples from a wide range of musical styles, Strings from Paris thrives in a space where multiculturalism reigns. This philosophy aligns perfectly with the mission of the show’s host, Candlelight.
“Strings from Paris is dedicated to creating a space where classical music and musicians have room to intertwine and thrive in the modern music industry,” said Chris Kim, Strings from Paris team member. “We aim to break down barriers within classical culture by approaching things from a modern angle and challenging ourselves and our audiences on what classical music is supposed to be.”
By reimagining classical music through the lens of contemporary genres, Strings from Paris hopes to inspire a new generation of music lovers. “We want younger audiences to see classical as a cool thing and something they want to pick up on their own approach with music that is important to them,” Paris concluded.
