Owning a piano is one thing—but having somewhere to practice is another. Between thin walls, condo noise rules, and shared living spaces, finding a place to play isn’t always easy. That’s where Toronto Public Library’s free piano practice rooms come in, with four branches offering free bookable practice spaces.
North York Central Library offers the most options, with a dedicated acoustic Piano Room on the second floor and a Digital Piano Lab featuring five Yamaha Arius keyboards for headphone-based practice. Both can be reserved up to seven days in advance in one-hour blocks, with extra time often available if no one is waiting.
Oakwood Village Library and Arts Centre has a Yamaha digital piano in a lower-level meeting room. Cardholders can book up to two hours per day, twice a week. Parkdale Library offers an upright acoustic piano in a private meeting room, available through same-day bookings for up to two hours weekly.
Booking Details
The Toronto Reference Library rounds out the list with two electric keyboards in the Arts department on the fifth floor. Headphones are required because the rooms aren’t soundproofed. However, the spaces are currently closed for renovations through October, leaving North York Central, Oakwood Village, and Parkdale as the three active locations for now.
Each branch has a few rules. North York Central also prohibits food and drinks in its practice spaces. Oakwood Village and Parkdale require children under 12 to be accompanied by an adult.
Despite those guidelines, the program remains one of the library system’s most useful and lesser-known services. Toronto’s public libraries may already have the answer for anyone looking to practice without disturbing neighbours or roommates.
