Another day, another accolade for Toronto!
According to a new ranking by financial services company Remitly, our beautiful city is among the most eye catching destinations in the world with the best first impressions from the sky.
Coming in at 12th place out of 30 global cities, Toronto ranked behind metropolises like Prague, Amsterdam, Vienna, and Singapore, but perhaps surprisingly, ahead of places like Las Vegas, Tokyo, Paris, and Miami.
To compile the list, a sample of 200 participants were shown a series of aerial photos of various cities and tracked their eye movements using the latest technology to see which images captured attention the longest and made the best first impression.
The maximum fixation time for each image was 16 minutes and 40 seconds.
While Prague claimed the top spot with an average viewing time of 14 minutes and 8 seconds, Toronto earned its score with an average of 6 minutes and 7 seconds.
According to Remitly, “Gazing out of the plane window as you descend into a city you’re about to call home gives you your very first impression of your new adventure.”
“Every city has its own visual identity, and you’ll get no better view of the layout than from thousands of feet in the air so for our latest study, we’ve unveiled the most eye-catching destinations that give off the best first impression from the air,” says the website.
The top 15 global destinations are as follows:
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Accra, Ghana
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Frankfurt, Germany
- Vienna, Austria
- Lagos, Nigeria
- Dublin, Ireland
- Singapore, Singapore
- Male, Maldives
- Zurich, Switzerland
- Indianapolis, USA
- Toronto, Canada
- Lisbon, Portugal
- Boston, USA
- Washington, USA
Remitly noted that over half of the top ten most eye-catching destinations are in Europe, thanks to their iconic buildings, high-rise skyscrapers, or natural beauty over a river capturing people’s attention.
However, as the only Canadian city to make the list, it appears that Toronto has plenty of air appeal of its own.
