In a devastating loss to the community and visitors to the Toronto Islands, a fire in the early hours of Sunday morning has completely destroyed what once was The Island Cafe.
The seasonal eatery on Ward’s Island was one of the most popular destinations to grab a bite on the islands in the summer months, with a focus on locally-sourced, farm-to-table fare, coffee, and treats.
Also reduced to ash was the historic Ward’s Island Association Clubhouse, which was built in 1937 and the host of countless events from weddings and birthday parties to company seminars and meetings.
Toronto Fire crews responded to the structure fire around 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 17, and were able to contain it from spreading to surrounding structures. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
As for the cause of the fire, it still has to be determined.
The Island Cafe was one of only a handful of restaurants on the Toronto Islands.
Over the weekend, locals took to social media to express their condolences, share memories, and experiences at the clubhouse and cafe.
“Keep sharing your memories, it’s inspiration for tomorrow,” the Island Cafe’s latest social media post reads.
As for rebuilding, it seems the owners are determined.
“While the Clubhouse and @islandcafeto are in ashes, the spirit of each is intact. As we mourn, we dream of a future site of summer fun. We dream of a season opening dance at the new Clubhouse, and the first cup of coffee at the new Island Cafe.”
